This book is an easy and enjoyable read, which can't be said for too many books written about chemicals and brain science. True to it's subject matter - dopamine - I found myself turning the pages quickly, eagerly anticipating what's next and reading the accompanying stories. It explains why, chemically, we are enamored with online buying, especially those companies that offer one-click and next day delivery (you know who you are), as well as the mind-numbing scrolls through social media feeds. The authors offer the importance of balancing dopamine hits to keep moving forward, and H&N brain chemicals (read the book...) to appreciate "what is." After reading this book I am much more aware of my own dopamine-seeking behaviors and able to consciously decide whether or not to act on them. And for that, I am grateful. Some interesting info, yes... But I find every aspect is assumed to be based off of two competing reward systems (dopamine or the H&N or here and now). And what I was really hoping for, how to heal a broken dopamine system, isn't there... At least nothing helpful is.And over and over I keep feeling like the statements are a bit of a reach. Using this one explanation or axis as the only element of whatever they're talking about.I can't even say precisely what dopamine is... Is it what makes us want to do something? I thought it was pleasurable, and often pain is what motivates me (sadly).
